American University’s Master of Arts in International Relations (MAIR) Online program prepares students to become leaders in an uncertain world where complex problems do not respect national boundaries.

Through the online Master of Arts in International Relations program, students learn how to think, analyze, question, understand, and act. These fundamental skills are essential in today’s world. Students develop strong foundational knowledge of the key theories and principles underlying the field of international relations, and they can choose one of four areas of concentration: Global Security, U.S. Foreign Policy and National Security, International Development, and International Negotiation and Conflict Resolution. Our students are primed for success in a variety of occupations in the public, private, and non-profit sectors.

The online MAIR program is 39 credit hours, but students who have previously completed approved introductory macro and microeconomics coursework will be eligible to forgo 3 credit hours and finish the program with 36. The program can be completed in as few as 24 months.

American University’s School of International Service seeks applicants for all of its online International Relations programs who are dedicated to improving the world through international relations, service, and innovation.

Applicants will need to submit the following:

International Relations Online offers a Master of International Relations degree that requires 36–39 credit hours to complete and prepares students with essential knowledge and skills for understanding international relations. Through our in-depth online learning experience, students will be introduced to topics ranging from international economics to intercultural communication—preparing young professionals to make a global impact.

Career Advancement in International Relations

Whether your aspirations are in global security, international development, foreign policy, national security, or conflict resolution, you will graduate ready to take on positions in a range of settings—think tanks, nonprofits, consulting firms, or government agencies—and promote peace worldwide.

Global Service
Professionals in global security work toward keeping volatile or unstable nations safe from outside threat. This might include mediating conflict, tracking threats, and proposing new policies and safety measures.

USA Foreign Policy & National Security
Professionals in this field typically focus on creating and implementing foreign policy, defense, intelligence, and public diplomacy to promote national security.

International Development
Working in international development means helping to improve—and sustain—the economic development and quality of life in an area. This includes alleviating poverty and illiteracy, elevating life expectancy, and heightening Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita.

Learning Outcomes

Course work in the MAIR program will provide students with the following competencies:
 

Theory and Practice
Students will be able to demonstrate writing, presentation, and thinking skills in the analysis of international relations as well as key quantitative research methods. They will also analyze policy to evaluate the effectiveness of programs.

Research and Analysis
Students will be able to demonstrate writing, presentation, and thinking skills in the analysis of international relations as well as key quantitative research methods. They will also analyze policy to evaluate the effectiveness of programs.

Professional Intercultural Skills
Students will acquire the intercultural skills to analyze and interpret conflicts that involve people of different cultures; to understand the process of intercultural negotiation and adaptation; and to appreciate how culturally determined values, beliefs, and worldviews shape behavior at all levels.

Specialized Expertise
Students will develop proficiency in a subject area beyond foundational knowledge through in-depth study of a specialized subfield.
